I joined DECA as a freshman and there’s an interesting story of how that came about. All through my latter elementary and middle school years, I wanted to be a dentist believe it or not. When course selection time came around in 8th grade, I chose Latin as my elective, but needed an alternative just in case. My older brother, who was a DECA member back in his high school days, and my mom recommended I list Introduction to Business and Marketing as the alternative because no matter what a person does in his or her life, having a business sense is invaluable. As fate would have it, not enough people signed up for the Latin course so I ended up in the business class and joining DECA which turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. Throughout my past three years in DECA, I have been involved on the chapter level through helping with fundraisers, charity events, and the school store. Year after year I knew I wanted to get more and more involved in this amazing organization so I ran and was elected a PA DECA District 9 Rep for 2010-2011.
DECA has truly made (and continues to make) such a huge impact on my life and shaped who I am today. This association has not only enhanced my leadership, public speaking, and communication skills, but it has also helped me discover my passion for business and made me a more confident person. I cannot wait for all the exciting experiences and opportunities lying ahead for this DECA year!
